Work Life Balance

It is not enough to be busy; so are the ants. The question is: what are we busy about?
Henry David Thoreau

Towards the end of last year, the local Business Women Association invited me to run a morning workshop on Work Life Balance. The turnout for the event was the best attendance for the year. It’s an indication of how many of us are struggling to fit everything we need to into our day.

Busyness is often seen as something that happens TO us; it’s not our fault and it’s something that is outside of our control. After all, there are only so many hours in the day, right? The truth is, BECAUSE there are only so many hours in the day, it really has to be our decision as to how we spend the precious hours that we have.

During the Work Life Balance Workshop we looked into the decision making process we use to allocate our time and energy. Most of us have an ‘on demand’ prioritising mechanism. We tackle what is yelling most loudly for our attention and repeat until exhaustion sets it!

Changing this behaviour comes down to changing the decisions that we make, and while this sounds simple, it often isn’t. Guilt, poor time management and an inability to say no, all impact our lives and choices. So what can we do if we are struggling to prioritise?

A helpful tip I came across recently is to look at situations demanding our attention in terms of the expected return on investment. We often approach financial decisions from this longer term point of view but we don’t apply the same principles to daily life decisions. Where can I invest my hard-earned money to get the best return on investment? Rephrase that question to: Where  can I put my valuable time and energy to get the best return on investment over the long term?

Health is often a much overlooked area to give attention to. Are we eating life-sustaining food or grabbing a pie and coke when we’re starving? Are we relaxing and getting enough sleep? Do our families get the best of us, or the exhausted worst of us? Most importantly, are we happy with our choices and behaviour?

Sometimes we have to take a short term hit to get a long term benefit. Rest is like that. We stop now but gain the benefit over time when we come back refreshed and recharged. At the start of 2017, now is the time to look forward, keeping a longer term perspective in mind. Busyness is an addiction, where are you choosing to invest your time and energy?

I would really love to if I could do things in time, so I could actually sleep and don't feel guilty. I mean, I often do things in the last minute and then I completely feel like I have 0 energy, while I've could spend every day 20 minutes and have energy every day...

I am currently working out the balance since coming back to full time work. It can get pretty tiring when you haven't got the juggle right.

These days it really seems like busyness is the norm. Bucking the trend takes courage and effort and many of the women I coach, struggle with guilt and saying no. Ah the challenges of the modern world!

I'm a notorious work-a-holic, but I know that being constantly busy makes me stressed out. As a result, my body suffers. I hope to better my ways while being productive at the same time.

I took a course in time management that changed my life really, they believed in 3 goals a day, you know 3 things you must finish ofcourse you get more than that done but it takes alot of the stress out of the day instead of an overflowing plate in which you get nothing done when you are splintered in so many directions at once. Loved the post, I struggle because I work from home and don't really get the disconnect like people who go to a job

I like the three things in a day approach. It's manageable and it's good to hear it has helped you. I also like the 15 minutes a day on a task that is overwhelming. Breaking things down into something manageable is a sound principle to follow, or at least I find it helpful.

It's important to have a balance between life and work, otherwise, you're going to do too much of one thing and lose focus on the other. I rely heavenly on schedules and timelines in order to gain that balance. I don't like the feeling of living too much and forgetting work and I also don't like the feeling of working too much.

Schedules and time-lines are a great help in keeping order in a day and I agree, too much either way doesn't work. It really is a balancing act.

You're so right about busyness. The first time I read about it as an addiction .. it was such a foreign concept I didn't believe it. Now I do! Thanks for a great post!

Thanks Ali. There is a lovely post that has gone around Facebook and it is says something like, you should meditate for 20 minutes a day, unless you are very busy, then meditate for an hour. Lol, another one of those foreign concepts about busyness!

I know that feeling, Kathy, and I really am much more inclined to focus on letting go of what is not important, rather than trying to ramp up my productivity yet again.
